Hall’s Walls has been providing superior interior finishes for over six years. Our philosophy is built on creating beautiful, unique, and healthful finishes…
We fell in love with American Clay when we discovered it during a bedroom/bath addition to our modest 1940s bungalow, the home that my grandparents lived in until the end of their lives.
Desiring something special, and different, we didn’t know that we would find a material that would change our lives, and touch the lives of many others. At that time American Clay was truly “green”, being a very new business with an ambitious vision.
We were struck by the beauty of the material, the difference in feeling that the clay plaster gave to a space, and the fun we had working with interior finishes that smelled good.
Truly though, it was a philosophical point that has led us to continue through all the many obstacles of learning to be small business owners, and that philosophical point is made very well by James Cutler of Cutler Anderson.
...I feel that the core of our problem lies in our fundamental disconnection from the living world that surrounds us. We, as a culture, no longer have the primitive emotional knowledge that we and the rest of the living world are one…if there is a path that avoids the looming future, it will start from an ethic of respect, appreciation, and love for all the variety of this planet. Therefore, I feel any methodology in any craft or profession that reinforces an emotional recognition of the gift of the real world is valuable in defending the future in which, it is hoped, other people can enjoy the world howling through Douglas firs.
James Cutler, “The Best of Cutler Andreson Architects”, 2003
As a biologist an additional point crept in for me: our health, our wellbeing and essentially every aspect of our lives is affected by our environment, particularly our interiors, where we spend so much time. Biological metaphors work well in this context and examples abound. Cells that detach from their proper substrate metastasize, cells that have the wrong chemical signals in their environment make the wrong products or cease functioning altogether, cells without precisely the proper support lose strength and may even contribute to disease. Our environment is spectacularly, if often unconsciously, important to our life.
