FAQs

  1. What is clay plaster?
Clay plaster is a veneer plaster that is a mix of clays (sourced from America), rock powders, and mineral pigments.
  2. Why use American Clay?
It’s gorgeous, durable and healthful, forever. It gives interior spaces a warm feeling, creates an environment reminiscent of outdoors and is resistant to dirt.
  3. Can I buy American Clay products directly from Hall's Walls?
Yes. Hall's Walls is a Dealer – we sell directly to the public as well as to contractors.
  4. What is the cost of the American Clay for my project?
A general rule of thumb is that the material costs for your project will be $1–$1.40 per square foot of wall space. To determine the total sq. ft. of your project, determine the sq. ft. of each wall separately (length x height) then add the four walls, together. You may want to subtract the area of large windows/doors, for material calculations, though we do not subtract openings for installation costs. We offer volume discounts, be sure to ask!
  5. How much clay will I need for my project?
Calculate the total square footage for each color. Coverage is different for the different products:
Loma – 200 sq ft per bag (finish coat, or basecoat over Sanded Primer Elite)
Loma with MudGlue – 240 (basecoat, "Professional Process")
Porcelina – 300 sq ft per bag
Marittimo – 160 sq ft per bag
Sanded Primer Elite – 300 sq ft per gallon
  6. Who can I call if I have a question regarding the products or the installation process?
You can call us! Also, we provide workshops and onsite training for crews who are unfamiliar with the American Clay products. We have 100% success in training homeowners to use American Clay and many homeowners do successful projects without taking a formal workshop.
  7. Where can I go to see the product installed?
We have a showroom located at 301 E. Pikes Peak Ave in Colorado Springs. Also, we keep a list of projects in Colorado – many homeowners and businesses are happy to show off their project.
  8. What tools will be needed for an American Clay installation project?
You will need trowels, a paintbrush and/or roller for applying sanded primer, 5- or 6-gallon buckets and lids, a half-inch drill, a plaster paddle, and a plastering hock. We will provide you with a comprehensive list of tools at our workshop. We sell many of the Japanese specialty trowels that plasterers prefer.
  9. Can American Clay be applied over a previously painted wall?
Yes, American Clay can be applied over previously painted surfaces, provided they are properly prepared and coated with sanded primer, same with drywall. For application over scratch coats, priming is generally unnecessary.
  10. Can I use American Clay to plaster my ceilings?
Yes. Ceilings generally capture a lot of light and are especially stunning when clayed.
  11. Can I use American Clay on an exterior wall?
No, American Clay is an interior product. However, American Clay does have a new Exterior Lime Plaster product that produces a gorgeous look and contains a high degree of recycled material. Please call us for details.
  12. Can I use American Clay to form a counter top, or on a floor?
No, American Clay is an interior wall plaster.
  13. Can I use American Clay in a bathroom or kitchen?
Yes, American Clay naturally absorbs water vapor and is an excellent material for kitchens and bathrooms. It is also naturally mold resistant. We recommend sealing in areas that will be splashed with water regularly (Penetrating (matte) or Gloss sealants are available).
  14. Can American Clay surfaces be washed?
Yes, American Clay can be washed with a light soap/water solution. Because the plaster is a mechanically set product (not a chemical set like cement) , excessive hydration will rehydrate and soften the clay. Also, since clay doesn’t hold a static electric charge, we have found that it attracts much less dirt than conventional wall treatments.
  15. Can American Clay surfaces be painted over?
Yes, the clay must be sealed first. But we have yet to find anyone who wanted to do that!
